This movie presents the events that happened right after the events in the first game Dead Space. The stories of four survivors on the ship USG O'Bannon. It started with an investigation on an unstable planet, then finding some mysterious artifact, then the planet explodes, but not before taking a shard from the artifact. The shard begins to take control of people minds and reanimate monsters from dead bodies. The shard (red marker) is destroyed and along with all the monsters. The survivors are found and brought to a ship (Sparkle or something) for investigation. As they are interrogated one by one, only one of them is not killed, the one who got into direct contact with the shard, Dr. Nolan. At the end of the movie his prison capsule is put side by side with the capsule of Isaak, the engineer from Dead Space game, and that is a direct link to the game. It is tough to follow the movie, because they don't stay on one story. You may watch this movie as a single story horror cartoon movie without the need to play the games or to watch Dead Space Downfall.
